How to Turn Photo Into Comic Book Cartoon Pop Effect in Photoshop Tutorial Hey guys, Colin Smith here from PhotoshopCAFE and I just got back from Comic Con last week, and it kind of inspired me for this week's tutorial. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to show you how to create a comic book look out ofa photograph. All right, so what we're going to do is we're going to take a photograph and we're goingto make it look like a comic book. There's two parts to this. The one part is that just kind of flatten it down and get those cartoon-looking colors, but the other part that's really going to make it work is these little half-tone dots or those pop dots, as we used to call them. And I'm going to show you how to do that right now. All right, so let's start here. What we're going to do, I've got a photograph from Adobe Stock and I'm just going to duplicateit, just hitting Ctrl J or that would be Command J to make a copy. And, of course, you could also drag it to the New Layer icon, so we've got two new layers. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to grab these two layers, and I want to group them together, so I can select them both. Right click, and then, choose Group from Layers, or you can hit Ctrl or Command G for Group,to do the same thing. Now the reason I want to do that is because I want to apply a Blend Mode between the two,but I don't want to affect all the layers--just these two--so I'm going to grab the top one right now. Then we're going to change the Layer Blending Mode down here to Hard Mix. Now, if you want to know more about Layer Blending Modes, check out the free e-book that I've got, and, also, I've got a video in here that I talk about layer blending modes inside of Photoshop. So, anyway, what we're going to do is just take the Opacity. We're just going to find a nice mix. So, there we go, right there is the unaffected photo, and as we pull it up, notice it starts to reduce the amount of colors very quickly, and that gives us a comic book look. So if you'll look there, we don't have, you know, the full spectrum of color, whatever we choose, so it looks more comic book style. All right, great. That's the first step that we want to do. Now, the next thing that we want to do is we want to apply these little dots on thereto that it looks like it's been printed at a high line screen or it's a low line screen, maybe. Save that, and so, what we're going to do is we're going to take this group, right click, and we're going to convert it to a Smart Object. All right, wonderful. Now we can apply filters to it. So let's add those little dots that make it look like it's been printed on a page. So we're going to go into Filter, and then, under Filter, we're going to go down to Evangelized we're going to go to a filter you've probably never used--Color Halftone. So we're going to click. Now, there's no interactive display on this. You can't actually see what's happening as we do it, but right now, the maximum radius's set to 8 pixels. That means that the largest pixel can be 8. Right now, as you can see, I'm working on a high res image. You can see it's 133%. So I'm going to use larger pixels. In the case where you're working, you might, it might work, you might have to change itif you're using a full res image, you might want to go larger. I'm going to guess, actually, about 12 is going to be the best, but what I want to dois I'm just going to show you. This is what happens if we do 8. So you can kind of see that, it's just too much; they're too small, so I'm going to go Filter, and I'm going to go back down here and I'm going to show you what happens when I use a larger one. So let's try 16 and you'll notice here it's going to look a lot better. So there we go. Maybe that's too big, so, you know, we can go somewhere in between, so let's try this,Filter, Pix elate, Color Halftone. And to be honest, actually, I didn't mind 16, it's not too bad, but let's go down to12 and see how that looks. And, you know what?12 looks really great. The only thing is we're losing a lot of detail because this halftone is just a little too strong. So what we can do is we can blend it with the rest of it by just going under the Smart-filter here that we've created. And see that little Blending Mode?We can just double click on that, and then, what it does is it brings this us up our blending options here. So there's different things we can do. We can play around with the Opacity. So if you want to just bring the Opacity down a little bit, so we get a little bit more-of a mix in there. I prefer that, it's about 42% right there, and then, click OK. All right, we're almost there. The only thing that's really missing right now are those outlines that define the detailof our super hero here. So what we're going to do is we're going togo back to our background layer. Just hit Ctrl or Command J for jump one more time, and we're going to drag it to the top. All right, so what we're going to do is we're going to create a line art from this particular layer. So let's do that right now, and we can do that using a Filter. So we're going to go under Stylize, and then we're going to go down to Find Edges. Now, this is going to look a little weird at first because there's a lot of color and stuff, so we need to tweak it a little bitso it's going to work better, so it's not bad though. Now we want to go in right now and use levels. We're going to clean this up, so we can hit Ctrl or Command L, and we want to do it righto the layer. We could do it as adjustment layer, but in this case, I'm going to do it as in a layer, because if I pull the black over here, notice how that really thickens the outline, or just makes it much more pronounced. Of course, you got all these stuff here weened to clean up. We can clean up all these by moving the white slider over. Notice now that we've cleaned up that whites, and I will just go to mid-tones, we can grab that little gray slider, and as we pull that over, notice it's going to start to reduce those significantly. So we could pull our slider with just a tad more. Let me just go back this way, and we're just going to take that right over. That's looking good. We got a nice outline there, so let's just click OK to apply that. Now we could have converted it to Black and White here. Well, as you convert that to Black and White, that will be Ctrl Shift U on the Windows. All right, so what we've got here right now is we've got our outline and we want to takethis line out now, and what we want to do is we want to mix it with our pop dots or,you know, our halftone kind of effect underneath. So the way we're going to do that, once again,Layer Blend Modes to the rescue. All right, so we want to apply a blend mode, and the best blend mode to do is to go downhere and use Overlay. And then, when we do that, notice that black and white lines there with our little dot,and there we go, we've got a comic book effect. So if we look at this before, there's our photograph, and then afterwards, we've created this comic book effect. Hey guys, thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed this.
